Environmental Management

For more than 30 years HTSPE has led the integration of environmental management into development planning. The company has worked on environmental management projects in over 125 countries.

In recent years we have carried out environmental projects for DFID and DEFRA in the UK, for the European Commission and for many international donor agencies including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Global Environmental Facility.

Our approach to environmental management derives from our commitment to sustainable development and the MDGs, and seeks to balance the urgent need to improve water supply, sanitation and resource management for the world's poor with the need to conserve natural resources and protect biodiversity for future generations. Minimising and mitigating the effects of global climate change have become key components of this work.

From local impact assessment to national policy development, institutional strengthening and environmental education, HTSPE assists communities and countries to manage their environment in ways that balance poverty alleviation with conservation.

Our range of services includes:

Environmental Assessment:

We work closely with all stakeholders to establish profiles of existing resources and to select environmentally sustainable management regimes. Data management using the latest techniques for collection, analysis and dissemination is an important part of this service.

Policy and Planning:

HTSPE advises governments and public and private institutions on developing environmental policy and legislation. Public consultation and environmental education are key services.

Programme Management and Project Performance Assessment:

We combine our expertise in environmental management and project management to provide services in programme and fund management and in performance monitoring and evaluation. For example, since 2001 we have been responsible for monitoring and supporting projects funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme. We also evaluate projects for international donor agencies such as IUCN.

Conservation and Protected Area Management:

The establishment of protected area status raises difficult choices, both social and environmental. We assist stakeholders in the selection of an appropriate model, whether controlled multiple use or as a wilderness, scientific or biosphere reserve. We have worked on the management of buffer zones for internationally important reserves since 1980.

Biodiversity Management:

In 1992, 75 countries signed the Convention on Biological Diversity. We recognise the importance of this convention; indeed, we have been conducting biodiversity studies in the terrestrial, freshwater and marine sectors since the early 1950s. We specialise in the analysis of complete ecological systems and in monitoring changes in the patterns of biodiversity.
